Silver Spring Maryland Guidelines Attorneys

Early in 2010 the Maryland legislature updated the state's child support guidelines, for the first time since 1989. The state had ranked very low in comparison to other states.

The calculation factors in a dozen or so figures, including the number of children, amount of time spent with each parent, gross income of both parents, and obligations to support children from a prior marriage. Factors taken into consideration in setting the amount include health-related insurance and expenses, and day care expenses.

An amount per child is set, and is paid directly to the custodial parent on a set day of the month. There may be deviations from the amount resulting from the guidelines. Get assistance from an attorney familiar with Maryland family law and the latest information on child support.

The fact that the guidelines were changed does not constitute a change in circumstances warranting modification. Do not stop paying child support or reduce your payments. "Voluntary impoverishment" is leaving a job or taking a lower paying job in order to reduce the child support you pay. We do not recommend it. The state and court system take child support obligations very seriously.
